Rutland City in the Dark: Northeast Blackout of November 9, 1965
This quarterly, published in 2009, is a narrative that follows the Northeast Blackout of November 9, 1965. The author, Clifford Giffin, discusses the event from the point of view of an electrical utility worker in the area. Giffin’s account follows the scramble to uncover the electrical problem causing the blackout, and the frustration and confusion caused by the difficulty in restoring power to Rutland. He ends his narrative by discussing what caused the black out: a relay failure at an electrical station in Canada. Lastly, he discusses the modifications made to the Northeastern electric power systems in an effort to avoid a similar blackout.
